Some Info About the area:
One of the most important dune ecosystems in the Rías Baixas is found in Cangas. Among its many beaches,
the most inviting are: urban Rodeira; Areamilla beach (near Punta da Balea); beautiful Liméns; Nerga, in
the Costa da Vela-Nerga nature preserve and very close to the nudist paradise that is Barra beach; and
lastly Menduiña, which has won the European Blue Flag distinction several times.
Another place of great ecological interest is the promontory at Cape Home, with three striking lighthouses and a myriad of trails to walk. Cape Home is also the starting point of the so called Soavela coast, which traces a line of cliffs all the way to the lighthouse on Punta de Couso. Another of the nature preserves is the Coiro oak grove, considered one of the most stunning Atlantic forests in Galicia. One of the trails that runs through this shady forest leads to the Bouzós River cascade, a magical spot that is well worth the walk. And this is only one of the multitude of sites in Cangas that invite you to a serene contemplation of the landscape. The O Facho, San Roque, and Balcón do Rei (“King’s Balcony”) lookouts offer unsurpassed panoramas of the region, its beaches and cliffs, its valleys and mountains.
Heritage
Cangas is also art and history. In O Hío, for example, you will find a valuable architectural ensemble formed by the Romanesque church of San Andrés, its rectory, and the "cruceiro de Hío" (carved stone cross)– this cross is considered the paramount example of this characteristically Galician rural art form.
Also worth mentioning are the Barroque churches Coiro and Darbo, the Aldán manor house; and of course the historical center of Cangas itself – its most attractive features are the Renaissance-style former collegiate church of Santiago, the seamen taverns, and its popular architecture.
Tradition
Out of all the many traditions preserved in Cangas, there are one that because of their singularity have won the distinction of being of Galician Tourist Interest, the Easter Week, when there are parades of jointed statues, that these takes place in the village of Cangas. In the other hand are the dances that are performed in several of the region’s churches for different celebrations: the Dance of the Ladies and Gallants of Aldán, the Dance and Counterdance of Darbo, and the Dance of Hío.
